We Have Come This Far Through Faith
Lake Worth Beach is energetically pushing forward for its 31st annual Martin Luther King celebration beginning on Friday evening, January 17th, and culminating in the Candlelight March through downtown on Monday, January 20th. This year’s commemoration will carry the theme, “We Have Come This Far By Faith.” A full slate of activities is being planned. All events are free and open to the public.
On Friday, January 17th, 7 pm, musical theatre, Heroines of Voting Rights, will be presented at 7:00 pm at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (Lucerne Avenue & Palmway)
This dramatic piece is a joyful exploration of two women who made a difference: Ida B. Wells and Fannie Lou Hamer. Performed by the Core Ensemble: Actor, Cello, Piano, Percussion. Light refreshments and fellowship hour will follow the program. For more information, call 561•310•3230.
A Community Service Day will be held on Saturday, January 18th, at 8 am. Volunteers of all ages are invited to meet at the Wingfield Street City Gymnasium for a community clean-up organized by Healthier Lake Worth. Please join your neighbors to get to know them better working side by side, while making a difference in the beautification of our City.
The annual MLK Interfaith Breakfast will be held this year at Barton Elementary (1700 Barton Road) on Monday, January 20th. Breakfast will be served at 8 am with a youth-led inspirational and musical program to follow that embraces Dr. King’s inclusion of people of all faiths (and no faith) working together for civil rights and justice. Representatives of more than a dozen Lake Worth faith communities will participate.
The 31th annual Candlelight March will be a highlight of the day as hundreds march through downtown Lake Worth with unity, dignity, and respect to continue the struggle for a fuller realization of freedom and equality in our nation. Participants will gather at 4:00 pm at City Hall for a musical Sing-Along and parade down Lake Avenue to the MLK “Ball” Memorial. A brief commemorative program at the Cultural Plaza Memorial will recognize the accomplishments and unfinished business of Dr. King’s Dream.
Back by popular demand will be a Fellowship Dinner at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (402 North M Street). The free dinner will provide an opportunity for warm fellowship across religious and racial lines in the spirit of Dr. King. Sponsoring religious and civic organizations will provide food and beverages. Members of the public are invited to help with the dinner preparations, which will begin at 4 pm.
Volunteers needed. Please contact Retha Lowe at (561) 582-7276.
